What are the differences in size?

Double basses come in six sizes: 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4.

The double bass size each musician chooses depends on their height and hand size. While the double basses you see at the edge of an orchestra may appear very large compared to the surrounding instruments, more often than not they are actually 3/4 size, which is the most common size for adults.

Cello

Cello comes in eight sizes: 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 4/4, 7/8.

Since the cello is only played from a seated position, the size you choose will depend on your height and finger span. While you would think that 4/4 (or "full size") would be the preferred size for adults, 7/8 is actually the most popular because it allows for a slightly smaller and more common finger span.

Similar to cellos, violins come in eight sizes: 1/32, 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 4/4.

Slightly different from the double bass and cello, the size of the violin is primarily determined by arm length and span, rather than height. Most students will start on 1/10 or 1/8, depending on the age they start – some children will even start on 1/16!

Violas are available from 11 inches up to 17+ inches!

Most violists typically play a 15.5-inch or 16-inch viola, but if you have a longer arm span and a heavier build, a larger instrument is available. There is some debate as to which viola size is best for adults, but ultimately, it just comes down to each person's preference.

However, the violin is generally considered to be one of the most difficult string instruments to learn because it requires a higher level of skill and more nuanced technical mastery. The viola is relatively easy, but still takes a lot of time and effort to master. Cello and double bass may be easier in some aspects, such as their bowing and finger positioning on the left fingerboard being more clearly defined.
